Compare Flooring Choices for a Bathroom: The Professional Handyman’s Least Expensive Options

When comparing flooring choices, whether a professional handyman or someone doing a DIY home improvement project, it is important to consider the environment the flooring will be placed in. Some are better for drier climates, others more suited for the humidity of a region like Eugene, Oregon where we are located. Additionally, flooring for a bathroom remodel must be able to withstand water. It will be important to choose something resistant to mold and mildew. With so many flooring options out there, it can be difficult to decide. Some products are better for the environment and better for the quality of air in a house if they are made with natural materials. Synthetic materials are less expensive but may be unhealthier. If VOC or volatile organic compound emissions are a concern to you, be aware the adhesives and sealants in less expensive products can also contain chemicals.

Below is a list of potential flooring options for a bathroom with the pros and cons.

Laminate

This is easy to install and can be made to look like hardwood floors which are not water resistant. This is one of the least expensive options. Some manufacturers discourage their products to be placed in bathrooms, so be sure to check the brand. Some laminates contain formaldehyde and are not as healthy for those concerned with air quality.

Linoleum

Linoleum is durable and stain resistant. Because it is made from natural materials, it is biodegradable, and can be recycled. It is better for one’s health because it doesn’t produce VOC emissions, is anti-microbial, and repels dirt. The pattern and color extend beyond the surface into the material which makes scratches difficult to see. This material is water-resistant, not waterproof. Some installations can involve waterproofing. Although inexpensive, the installation is difficult and it is suggested that it is installed by professionals.

Vinyl

Some of the advantages of this material is that it is resistant to water, is inexpensive, easy to install and comes in a variety of styles. The disadvantages are that it is easily scratched, is made from petroleum and therefore most brands create toxic byproducts such as VOC emissions which are released into the home.

Cork

This is made from a renewable resource and considered to be good for the environment. Cork is resistant to water and mold. Though slightly more expensive than vinyl and laminate, they are far cheaper than porcelain and stone.

Bamboo

This material is resistant to mildew, mold and bacteria. It is also made from a renewable resource. On the downside, if it gets flooded, the wood will warp. Although an improvement to using hardwood in a bathroom, there are better options than any kind of wood in a bathroom. The cost is comparable to cork.
